In its 21st Annual Home loan Lending research, the Pittsburgh Neighborhood Reinvestment Group highlights a number of barriers to Black’s attaining homemortgage financing, however one stands apart well above the others– bad credit.

Though the report notes bad credit history/rating as the primary factor for all home mortgagemortgage denials, the numbers for African Americans are significantly greater, 58 percent– 20 percent higher than for White candidates, 13 percent higher than for Hispanic candidates and more than 30 percent higher than for Asian candidates.

Ernie Hogan, PCRG executive director, said the data, covering loaning between 2005 and 2013, supports anecdotal evidence that the city’s poor and minority homeowners are not taking advantage of the economic recovery to the degree others are.
